Our promise is a literate community.

Literacy Project is a non-profit organization that was established in 1985. We are funded through grants, donations from individuals, corporations and foundations, and the United Way of Humboldt County.

We believe

The Problem is Great

In Humboldt County, an estimated 15,000 adults in our county are functionally illiterate.  That is, are functioning below a fifth grade level.

In addition, an estimated 23,000 adults in our county are functioning at between a fifth and eighth grade level.

More than 40 percent of the U.S. workforce and more than 50 prcent of high school graduates do not have required basic literacy skills for employment.
