English as a Second Language
Recent immigrants need a specialized curriculum, English as a Second Language (ESL). Some adults who come to HLP can speak some English but want to learn more and add reading and writing in English to their skills. For many, the classes available at adult schools don't fit their schedules. We find tutors for these adults.
ESL learners are interviewed and assessed to determine their level of English proficiency. They are then ready to be matched. The tutors receive the same basic tutor training since many of the techniques work well with non-native speakers of English. Once a match has been made, the learning teams meet regularly and tutors report progress, just like in the Basic Literacy Program.
HLP offers special training sessions to the tutors covering ESL issues and techniques specifically for English learners. Our library provides the tutors with many books and other materials that can be used. And we have a group of experienced ESL instructors ready to help when a team seems to be hitting a wall.
